It’s been nearly a week since our littlest houseguests moved in.  A tiring, sleep-deprived week.  Getting up every two hours for puppy feedings takes a toll.

Luckily, we’re over that hurdle.  Mama Lucky seems to be producing enough milk for all eight of the babies.

Our littlest guy gained almost an ounce a day over the last two days.  Weighing in at 8.6 oz, he’s still smaller than most of his siblings by half.  But he’s holding his own.  And he is darling.  They all are.

The others, 3 girls, and 4 more boys, all weigh in between 12.8 oz and 16 oz, at 6 days old.

According to my puppy care mentor, they might end up being a bit bigger than Mama Lucky, going by their current weights.

Just another week or so and they’ll start opening their eyes.  Although, watching the squirmy little blind beans get around their box is adorable.

We haven’t named them yet.  We can barely tell some of them apart.  Names come when their personalities start to show.

Mama Lucky seems happy, she’s venturing out of the whelping box more often. She loves her meals of rice and venison, they seem to be her favorite time of day, much to my dismay.  Putting raw red meat in a food processor disgusts me to no end.  And reinforces the all of the reasons I don’t eat red meat.  I will be happy when I’ve made the last crockpot of homemade dog food.  She eats her dog food well too, but only because I stir the rice and venison mixture into it.

She likes to spend time away from the puppies.  She was out with me for 45 minutes just a bit ago.  Although she avoids the other dogs, even when they are locked in the playpen.  She hides just at the front of my desk so they can’t see her.  And she’s always ready for walks outside.  Or more like dragging me around the yard.  She’s not as good on a leash now that she’s getting comfortable with me.

She doesn’t like Sister to walk her.  Or to help with caring for the babies.  But she’s always up for getting some attention from her.

But all in all, she seems to be happy and content.  And probably getting a little spoiled.  I found her laying on my bed yesterday to get away from her pups.

New Fosters

Her soon to be foster parents visited her and the puppies on Saturday.  She seemed to like them just fine, and they liked her, as well.  Since Lucky is now producing enough milk for all of her babies, and everyone seems to be doing fine, they will be moving to their new foster home this weekend.

We’ll miss them, but they won’t be far away.  And I’ll be seeing them to take them to vet appointments every few weeks.

But our house won’t seem empty, we’ve still got the 10 permanent residents.  And we’ve got a new girl to meet on Thursday.  A deaf Cocker Spaniel girl that is terrified in the shelter.  She’ll be coming to keep our senior kids company until the perfect family finds her.

We’ve also got a very special houseguest arriving in a month, to stay through the holidays.  Brother, whom we haven’t seen in two years, is coming home, from a two-year station at Kadena Air Force Base, in Okinawa, Japan, for a nice long visit.  And we can’t wait to see him!
