Wow, Mama Lucky’s babies are growing like bad weeds.  At 3 weeks old, their eyes are open, and they’re starting to escape their bed, a kiddie swimming pool, don’t laugh – they make great whelping areas.  They’re so popular are whelping beds that they even make special whelping puppy pads for them.  And they really do work great, at least until the little monsters learn to climb out of them.

Mama Lucky

Mama Lucky is happy, and she’s still taking great care of her babies.  She’s also getting spoiled on fresh venison and liver, and doesn’t want to eat her dog food anymore. But she still needs to put on some weight, which will take a lot of extra calories when she’s nursing 8 babies.

She’s also apparently developed a bad habit of going out the dog door at night and barking.  Which wakes up the other dogs in the household.  But other than that, she’s doing good.  And living the good life, with her own doggy door and fenced in play yard.  Although it’s getting too cold here to spend much time outdoors.

Tiny Tots

No longer just squirmy little beans, the puppies are growing fast.  All but Little Bean are up to about 3-4 lbs.  Little Bean weighs in at just 1.3 lbs.  (But we’ll talk more about him later.)

Their eyes are open now, and they are on the move.  And they are hungry, constantly.  So they’ve started on their first semi-solid food.  Soggy, mashed up 4Health Puppy food.  And they are loving it.  They really get into feeding times now.  Like really into it, as they like to climb in the bowl and stand.  Little mess makers.

They also got their first dose of Pyrantel pamoate de-wormer.  They really liked it too, luckily.

Little Bean

Little Bean, the tiny runt of the litter, isn’t growing as fast as the other puppies in the litter.  So he will be taking a trip to the vet to see how he is doing.  So we’ll know more about him tomorrow, and will keep you updated.
