I’ve sat down to write this post three different times, on three different days.  But I’m always interrupted by the squeal of a tiny puppy wanting to be fed, or held.

Little Bean goes to the Vet

Last Thursday Little Bean went to the vet for a check-up.  He seems very wobbly, and of course tiny next to his much bigger siblings. So we wanted to make sure he didn’t have any underlying medical problems that were keeping him from growing like a healthy puppy.

Fortunately, he is a pretty healthy puppy.  At just 1.3 pounds, and three weeks old, he’s just tiny.  Being the runt of the litter, had we humans not intervened when he was born, he probably wouldn’t have made it.  So developmentally he is behind his siblings, along with being about half the size of the other seven puppies.

Little Bean is not thriving with his rather large litter.  Having to compete with his much bigger siblings for resources (mama’s milk) he’s not growing as fast as they are.  So he needs a little help.

Little Bean moves back

So Little Bean is back with us.  Being bottle fed every three hours.  And he’s doing much better.  On both Friday and Saturday he gained almost 2 oz a day.  Yesterday he gained a little less.  And weigh in isn’t until 4 pm, everyday, so we’ll have to weight and see what today’s weight will be.

He spends his days lounging in the Pup-quarium on the kitchen table, since it’s in the warmest part of the house.  With a low heat heating pad and a few hot water bottles to keep him warm.  He is starting to drink his puppy formula out of a bowl, and we’ve started him on some puppy food gruel.  And he throws the cutest temper tantrums when I take to long to get his bottle ready.

He spends his nights in a small crate on my nightstand.  So that I can hear him waking up and wanting fed.  We sleep for 3-4 hours between feedings.  And I think I’m finally starting to adjust to it.

Visiting Mama Lucky and Siblings

We make frequent visits to Mama Lucky and his siblings too.  That way he can still nurse off of Mama some, to help with his immunity.  And so he can spend some quality time with the rest of his family.

Spoiled Baby

He’s also becoming quite spoiled, and prefers to be held rather than to be in his box.  So he spends a lot of time tucked into my sweatshirt while I work.  Or being carried around by a member of the family while we try to go about our lives…  That now revolve around a 1.6 lb (as of yesterday) puppy.  Why?  Well, because his tiny little cries upset the rest of the dogs in the house.  With the exceptions of Snuggie and Cookie, who can’t hear him.
