I’m way behind in writing this, sometimes life gets in the way, but 3 weeks ago we welcomed foster dog #66 into the household. A little bundle of joy in the form of a Yorkie Schnauzer Mix.

And Cami now has a boyfriend…

The lovebirds, Ryder and Cami

What a ball of energy he is.  Ryder may only weigh in at about 8 lbs, he’s very close in size to our Cami, but he is a bundle of energy.  He doesn’t walk, he prances.  And he looks so darn cute doing it.

And our Cami has really taken to him.  They spend nap times cuddled up together, kissing (licking) each other’s faces.  Sister says that Cami is too young to have a boyfriend, though.  Even though she had her first birthday earlier this week.

He loves to play with the other dogs.  And he does pretty good entertaining himself while I’m busy, after he tires out Cami, and any other dog who will play with him.  He does love a good game of tug, or fetch with his humans too.  He’s a very silly boy, very entertaining!  And he reaffirms my belief that Yorkies and Yorkie Mixes are in fact more energetic than even Jack Russell Terriers.

He constantly wants to have something in his mouth.  (And this makes it really hard to get a good picture of him.)  But he’s not picky, and will pick up any toy he finds, from the stuffed animals to the Nylabones.  But his all time favorite thing to find is one of Sister’s dirty socks.  He doesn’t destroy them, just carries them around.

And due to the always having something in his mouth, he’s pretty quiet.  He howls with the pack when they know I’m leaving, and joins in on the bark fest when I return and greet them.  But if I come in after hours and don’t greet them, he stays quiet.  And when Sister leaves for school in the morning, he’s quiet.  He doesn’t fuss at all until I emerge from my bedroom to start morning routine.  And even then it’s just dancing around until it’s his turn to go out.

Ryder is a joy to have in our home now.

But it was a bit of a rough start.  We were warned that he might be dog aggressive.  So we took it slow.

It took a couple of weeks of just hanging out with Cami and the puppies that were still here at the time.  But now he’s running with the Big Boys, the Old Kids, and Cami.  (The puppies have all been adopted.) And other than a few little spats, with our reactive boys, Jackyl and Chewy, things have been going smoothly.  Okay, there was one incident where they pinned him to the couch when he accidentally landed on Chewy, who was chilling out under a blanket.

He’s not aggressive, but he can be reactive.  The same as our big boys.  They don’t seek out a confrontation, but if another dog challenges them, they don’t back down either.  Jackyl and Chewy are used to having to put puppies in their place.

He has learned to live with our pack.  And learned his place in it.  Although, he sometimes like to challenge that place.  Usually, when it comes to my lap.  I am, and I fear always will be, the most coveted resource in our household.  I’m the keeper of the dog treats.  So most spats have to do with who’s closest to me.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like this sweet little Yorkie Schnauzer Mix will be with us much longer.  Now that we’ve been able to assess his behavior, and prove that he isn’t dog aggressive, he’s got a family wanting to meet him next week.
