Post Series: 10 Basic Dog Training Commands & How to Teach Them

Every polite, well-mannered dog should know at least the ten basic dog training commands.  

Teaching your dog to come when called (recall) is one of the first commands you’re going to want to learn.

Teaching your dog emergency recall, that you only use in emergency situations, so that they don’t get too used to it and don’t listen, is important.

Teaching your dog to heel is a little bit more difficult than just loose leash walking, and will take some time to practice.

The Leave It command is an important one.  One that I had failed to teach to my Big Boys for many years, and it cost me dearly.

It’s important to teach your dog to Drop It, or the Release command, for your safety, as well as your dog’s safety.

Teaching your dog to Sit, is probably the first of the basic dog training commands that you’ll teach him.

Teaching your dog to Lie Down is almost as easy as sit.  Dogs like to lie down, it’s another natural behavior.

Putting a dog into a Stay can keep him out of dangerous situations, and keep him out from underfoot when it’s needed.

Teaching your dog to Wait is useful when opening crates, doors, crossing the street, etc.
