Training is also a good way to bond with your dog, but practicing the same tricks over and over gets boring after a while.  So why not teach your dog to speak, as a great new activity for you and your dog to work on.

Although teaching your dog to speak isn’t absolutely necessary, it can be a cute trick, and handy at times.  If you’re having a hard time teaching the Quiet command, teaching your dog to speak can help.

How to Teach Your Dog to Speak

Teaching your dog to speak is a relatively easy trick to teach.

You’ll need your high value dog treats.  A way to get your dog excited.  A favorite toy, etc.  Anything that gets your dog excited.  Most of our dogs are easily excited if I start bouncing around like I’m jumping for joy, and don’t even require a toy.  Just me being silly.

So your first step is to get your dog excited.

Once he’s barking, immediately say Speak (or whatever word you’re using for your Speak command), and give him the treat.

If your dog doesn’t bark when he gets excited, try holding the treat behind your back.  Hopefully this will cause him to protest verbally.  If he does, immediately say Speak and give him the treat.

If he still doesn’t bark, try getting all excited again.  Or you can try barking at him.

Remember practice makes perfect, before you try to phase out the treats.
